The Galaxy Guide

Description

The Galaxy Guide is an online PHP/MySQL database for statistics for the out of print West End Games Star Wars Role playing Game. It is intended as a resource for players and game masters alike.  It is also intended to be a repository for game information, a haven for players and a place where the game may be kept alive.

History

I started the Galaxy Guide on a whim in March 2008.  I’d wanted to better learn MySQL and PHP for a while.  I had toyed with various avenues of doing so, but hadn’t had a good, solid project through which to learn them.  At the same time I was getting back into playing the old West End Games D6 Star Wars role playing system.  It occurred to me that it would be nice to have a searchable database of statistics, and the Galaxy Guide was born.  I immediately began putting it together and it quickly grew into a feature limited but useful database over the course of about a week.

After I introduced it to the Rancorpit gaming community with the intention of adding all the statistics slowly by hand, it was revealed that a member of the community who went by the username Gry Sarth had created .pdf compilations containing a large number of d6 statistics.  He also had them in text file format. He graciously provided them and I am attempting to give the database a good head start by uploading those text files.

Current State

Currently the guide contains all of Gry Sarth’s weapon statistics.  It also has the structure for equipment and non-player characters and the beginnings of the structure for vehicles.  There are a smattering of equipment and NPC statistics uploaded.

Planned Features

Currently planned features include all types of statistics: weapons, equipment, droids, vehicles, starships, planets, npcs, alien species and force powers.  Also planned is an online campaign manager in which gamemasters can design and manage campaigns by bookmarking statistics, writing out adventure information, uploading maps and uploading hidden NPC stats.  Play by Post forums modified with a dice rolling feature and linked into the database are planned.  Also in the works is a java applet allowing the creation of .jpg maps for use with games.
